Where Your Attention Goes, Everything Else Follows

For a long time, I assumed the biggest challenge in business was finding enough time. But I had it backwards.

Time is limited for everyone. What separates people isn’t how many hours they have, it’s where their attention goes while those hours are passing.

It’s surprisingly easy to spend an entire day moving from one task to the next without being fully engaged in any of them. You can sit through meetings while thinking about the next one, answer emails while half-listening to a conversation, or finish the day feeling busy without being able to point to what actually got done.

I’ve become convinced that attention is one of the most valuable assets we have because it influences the quality of our decisions, our relationships, and the way we show up for the people around us. When our attention is constantly fragmented, it’s difficult to lead well, think clearly, or create meaningful momentum.

That’s something I’ve been reflecting on this week, and it connects to a few things I wanted to share with you below.

AI Should Give You More Time To Be Human

One of the biggest promises of AI is that it gives us time back. The question is what we’re doing with it.

If the hours AI saves simply get filled with more meetings, more notifications, and more things competing for our attention, then we’ve become more efficient without becoming more effective.

I think the businesses getting the greatest return from AI understand that the goal isn’t to remove people from the equation. It’s to remove the repetitive work that prevents people from doing what only they can do.

Leadership still requires judgment. Coaching still requires conversation. Building trust with a client still requires presence. Those are the things technology can’t replace, and they’re often the things that create the most value.
